Dry Eye

There is an eye condition called "Dry Eye." Prior to my last eye appointment I thought the symptom was simply "dry eyes," as in not having the ability to cry. I've always been able to call on my tears when I need them. However, my doctor's assistant picked up on something I said and the doctor requested a 'slit' test where a dye was placed in each eye along with what felt like a tiny piece of paper. Dry eye can exhibit itself as a sensitivity to light, a grittiness in the eye, slight burning or even slight fatigue. I've had the burning, itching and the feeling like there was something in each eye. I never felt there was anything wrong though.

I was instructed to keep my eyes shut until they returned (five minutes?), which I did. I thought I felt my eyes tearing up while they were gone. When they came back and I was told to open my eyes. It felt like they were stuck together with a postage stamp. The whites of my eyes were stained orange and they ached the rest of the day. The result is I have Dry Eye.

For now I am to take 6 capsules of Flax Oil* (1 tablespoon) daily plus use artificial tears. These are the same artificial tears my mother was recommended to use by the Sjogren's Foundation. This is not the first time someone has suggested Flax Oil to me.

I was told to purchase artificial tears that are natural and have no preservatives. These lubricant eye drops will help wash off anything that happens to be on the lens of my eye which could irritate it. After bringing several to the counter, the pharmacist suggested (as had my doctor) Bion Tears.

This is all first stage treatment for Dry Eye. Should the condition progress, these over the counter remedies will be substituted for prescription medicines. However, for now this is the way to treat Dry Eye.

There are conditions related to this that could cause Dry Eye. I remember my mother having a condition called Sjogren's Syndrome where her tear ducts could no longer manufacture tears. I imagine there are others I am unfamiliar with.

* Barlean's was recommended to me by my doctor. It is dated, 100% organic and I have been instructed to keep it in my refrigerator (which is where I purchased it from them).
