How Sales Representatives find Product Lines

Several years ago when I started trying to carve my own niche as a manufacturer's Sales Representative, I had to do an extensive amount of digging to find great product lines to represent. I knew many of these companies only recourse was to sign up with a group who had a showroom in Dallas, Atlanta, New York or anyone of the other numerous sales markets that occur randomly across the nation throughout the year.

Nothing is a 'sure thing' however I had previously experienced having a new product placed in a booth with hundreds of other products. Only if a new product was lucky enough to have a salesman there who liked it extensively might it actually be 'sold'. Otherwise it seems to be the standard fare that get the retailer's nod. Remember, most retailers are on a very tight schedule when they go to market. The other 'market' option is for product lines to rent their own booth in what the markets call "Temporaries." They are called that because some markets are open year-round and their display spaces look more like fabulous retail businesses rather than wholesale "show places." A temporary will only exhibit during specific show dates...like a Summer Gift Show that might last three days.

As appealing as it was to have 'customers come to me' while I'd be in a booth, I wanted the opportunity to select product lines I could be proud and sell with confidence. That is exactly what I have done by being an independent sales representative.

If I knew then what I know now, I'd start with two different websites. First, I'd sign up at RepHunter. I've provided a link for you to do that. Once you type in information about yourself, which is strictly business related, your information will be ready for a compatible manufacturer to find you. From time to time you will receive an email telling you to return to RepHunter so you can consider a new product line. You'll have the opportunity to visit their home page, see what they offer and go forward (if you wish) or thank them and be on your way.

Another good company is Great Rep. This website is more or less if you want only to do the legwork but it is a good place to hunt for lines...if you are patient. They have catagories like "looking for rep" and "looking for lines" which are both helpful.

These two websites have been the most helpful for me. If I started over with a new product, I would list at both of these.
