Memories and my mind Manifestations of youth hit us at odd times. I can remember in my mid twenties driving down the highway looking at my old home and feeling quite silly when it suddenly dawned on me that elves did not live in the tree in front of my house. The tall oak tree had been filled with concrete and appeared to have a 'door' so as a youngster I imagined that elves lived inside. I never spoke of it. In fact, when Keebler Cookies came out, I was not very surprised since I knew that elves lived in trees. Closing in now at age fifty-six, I just realized that a nightmare I had as a child has a simple answer. I dreamt of long thick ropes that would extend forever and scare the daylights out of me. I'm not sure why I never connected the rope swing that I was on daily with that. I was constantly looking up at the long thick rope. The mind works in mysterious ways.
