Nutty as a Fruitcake
How many people do you know that actually like and eat fruitcakes? Growing up, at Christmas, we would always have several fruitcakes. I doubt we ever actually bought one but perhaps in days gone by, they did. I can remember these cakes being sliced and those 'frozen in time' pieces of fruit glaring back at me. Most of the fruit was candied, some of it is said to be dried. It was not particularly bad, it just was not good. There is very little cake, mostly the candied fruit held together by the sticky dough. I think to kill the taste of the entire cake, many doused it with a bottle of bourbon or brandy. That was in the 1950's. I remember hearing that it got better with age. I am now fifty-six. I am sure they did not mean, my age. Fast forward to the year 2000 and beyond (which we are well past) and I rarely see fruitcakes anymore except for sale in department or specialty stores. Change that line to "on sale" in department or specialty stores. Over the years we have been surprised when we receive one of these jewels for a Christmas gift. Most of us have heard of the term 'nutty as a fruitcake.' Have you ever wondered if that saying comes from the number of nuts in a fruitcake or just the crazy people who like them? There are fruitcake lovers in the world because there are still companies that sell them. Fruitcakes are considered a Christmas 'bread or dessert' and only make their appearance at that holiday time of the year in the United States. To the people that like them, they are considered a treat. To the rest of us, those of you who like them are "nutty as a fruitcake," a tad crazy or strange.

I read this intel first. Well, hmmm, you'll consider ME a tad crazy/strange. I loved my mum's fruitcake and have been known to make one or two myself .. using my dear old mum's recipe. Mum's fruitcake did not resemble the superstore sale cake, it had a dark cake batter (not sticky) and never doused with rum. Another difference is that it was never baked for Christmas but made for our yearly vacation. Our family of eight tented across Canada and the well-wrapped cake, in a large metal can, kept us in treats. The whole family loved the fruitcakes. I really liked this intel because it brought back memories of the family trips. Thank you for the reminder.
