Sweepstakes...A Hobby

Have you ever wondered WHO those people were that win those contests and sweepstakes? Where in the world do those Publishing House people come from? Why isn't it me? Well, did you enter and follow the rules? Are you sure?

Several years ago I wondered just that. I have always been lucky on a local basis winning things in small contests but never the few times I ever mailed anything in did I ever win. I wondered how they did it. Was it rigged?

Come to find out there are numerous Sweepstakes newsletters, some printed hardcopy and some online. I've attached a link to a newsletter that I really like called Sweeping America. There are even conventions that hundreds flock to in America and Canada. Sweepstaking is big business. More than that, it is a great hobby.

A few things I learned were you really have to follow the rules. Do not deviate - AT ALL. When the rules say use a 3" by 5" piece of paper, measure it. And those 3" by 5" cards? Make sure the ones you use do not have lines on the back! They are wanting a plain blank card.

There are also several fun online sweepstakes games also. I particulary enjoy Spotwinner. It is a new advertising medium – where you can win prizes for watching ads featuring products and services that are relevant to you. You can choose to view as many or as few available ads you want, answer a few simple questions about each ad, and get a sweepstakes entry for each ad you view. In 2007, I personally won over $1000 from them.

Contests are a little different than sweepstakes. With sweepstakes you simply enter your information and cross your fingers that you win. With a contest you will actually have to do something like write a poem, draw a picture or shoot a photo. Your odds of winning a contest will be better than a sweepstakes simply because less people enter them.

Sweepstaking is a fun hobby with great rewards. I don't believe that the contests or sweepstakes are rigged. There are just a kazillion people entering them these days.
